Flower for December– Amaryllis

Amaryllis are quite exotic in appearance which only adds to their popularity as a cut flower during the winter months.  Stylish and elegant flowers with large, trumpet blooms grow from straight stems with a base of elongated strap-like leaves.

Although sometimes confused with lilies, Amaryllis originate from South America and there are several varieties.   The name comes from the Greek, amarysso, which mean “to sparkle”.

Large flowering species are the most common and popular of the Amaryllis family with colours ranging from pure white and glowing deep crimsons to eye-catching festive stripes.

Amaryllis are commonly grown to be in bloom specifically for the Christmas period and make a fabulous tropical centre-piece for a Christmas table arrangement or gift bouquet combined with silver birch branches or pussy willow to create a dazzling festive display.

Amaryllis are incredibly durable as a winter cut flower and with a little care and attention can last nearly three weeks.  Ideally they should be place in a tall vase to offer support to the long stems. Although the stems are actually hollow so a simple gardeners planting stick inserted up the stem is a perfect way to add support. The blooms appear at different stages after the stem is cut so new buds will continue to bloom and renew the arrangement.

These lovely blooms are now in stock at The Cracked Pot Flower Boutique.  You can also order Amaryllis bouquets online from our Christmas Collection.
