Camellias are the Rose of Winter!
Although Camellias are one of the most popular spring-flowering shrubs they can bloom as early as late Autumn to mid-Winter and often provide a welcome splash of colour to an otherwise wintery green backdrop. Camellias are delightful evergreen shrubs with dark, smooth and glossy leaves with tapered ends. The most common varieties of Camellia have flowers in white, pink, red and blooms can be single or occasionally double. A yellow variety is more indigenous to parts of China and South East Asia. The blooms are a symmetric cluster of showy lush petals and open to reveal a central stamen.
Camellias are usually quite hardy although the early winter blooms do tend to suffer the effects of the lingering frost. Although they tend to need a slightly acid soil for planting on, they can be grown easily in containers of ericaceous (acidic) potting compost. Camellias enjoy partial sun in well-drained soil and should be kept from drying out in warm weather.
Perhaps the most popular variety is Camellia Japonica which originates in Japan and is often referred top as the “rose of winter”.
Camellias are renowned for their slow growing nature and represent faithfulness and longevity in the language of flowers. They can reach heights of 6 – 12 feet in a well cared for environment with dwarf varieties tending to grow to a maximum of 2 feet.
