Germans in the 7th Century first conceived the idea of a Christmas tree.
But it wasn’t until Martin Luther, founder of the Lutheran Church, initiated the practice of placing lights on Christmas trees in the 16th century.
In awe at the brilliance of stars shining through evergreen boughs, he mimicked that sight by placing candles on his Christmas tree, although today electric lights are much less hazardous.
The Christmas lights are also said to be representative of the stars guiding the Three Wise Men to the manger.
